The serene Yorkshire Coast stretches from the South Gare where the River Tees meets the North Sea southwards for 67 miles, as far as the Humber estuary. There are miles of sandy beaches as well as rock pools and cliffs, and towns, villages and resorts of all kinds – definitely a gorgeous area with much to explore.
Distinctive Landscape
The complex geology of the area gives rise to a great variety of coastal landscapes! Much of the coast is liable to erosion, which has led to the exposure of many interesting preserved features! For example, the remains of a 7000 year old petrified forest was exposed on Redcar beach following storms in 2018. Fossils, including dinosaurs, and jet (a mineral formed from what was wood from Monkey Puzzle and Chilean Pine trees) are being continually washed out of the cliffs.
Seaside Towns and Villages
The main towns of interest to visitors are Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington, which offer a full range of services, typical seaside attractions and much more! Because of its Dracula associations, Whitby hosts a Goth Festival twice yearly, which is known to attract thousands of people, while Scarborough boasts the stunning Scarborough Castle with access to sweeping panoramic views of the region.
Saltburn-by-the-Sea has a great beach, as well as cliffs, rock pools and a pier. It is a popular year round centre for surfing. Staithes is an atmospheric old fishing village where the explorer Captain Cook had his first job, in the village shop, before running away to sea in nearby Whitby. South of Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay is another popular destination. Bridlington, along with Scarborough and Whitby, offers boat trips out to sea for sightseeing and fishing.
Additional Attractions
Walkers are well catered for on the Yorkshire Coast with much of the coastline being accessible – it is intended that soon there will be a continuous path! Those who enjoy railways can take a train at Whitby along one of the most scenic lines in the country, and it is possible to connect at Grosmont with the steam railway that runs down to Pickering.
