Landscape and Wildlife

The South Downs National Park covers 1600 square kilometres including rolling hills, river valleys, ancient woodland, and the white cliffs of the south coast. The 100 miles South Downs Way has panoramic views to the English Channel finishing at the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, which are remnants of valleys eroded by the sea. There are rock pools to explore at The Pound in Eastbourne, and sand dunes at East Head.

Towns by the Seaside

There are many inviting Sussex seaside towns and cities, from the exciting Brighton to the more sedate Victorian resorts of Hastings and Eastbourne with their piers, boat rides, and fish and chips. In addition to the beach and pier, Brighton offers vibrant nightlife and a wide range of restaurants for all tastes. Shopping includes both hippie and hipster offerings in Brighton’s North Laines.

Inland, the town of Lewes has a rich cultural history, with a Norman castle and Tudor houses, as well as hosting the largest and most famous bonfire night festivities in November! Chichester, the county town of West Sussex, boasts streets and lanes of Georgian buildings and a beautiful cathedral. Chichester Harbour is even a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty!

Ashdown Forest is an ancient area of open heathland in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which is famous as the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh’s home in the stories by AA Milne! The Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park Station has an 11 mile run and a magnificent collection of vintage steam locomotives and carriages. Arundel Castle, founded in 1067, is one of the largest castles in England.
