An Assorted Landscape
The county has a diverse landscape including the rolling chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds (a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) which run from the Humber estuary southwards parallel to the coast and as far as the Lincolnshire Fens in the south-east of the county. The Carrs is an area similar to the Fens, but in north Lincolnshire. To the north is the industrial Humber estuary and coastal area around Grimsby and Scunthorpe. To the south-west of the county are the Kesteven Uplands, which are rolling limestone hills with a distinct and dramatic look and several popular cycling climbs.
Traditional Cities and Towns
Lincoln is the county town, and the third largest cathedral in the country is its outstanding attraction. The town flourished as a centre of the wool trade and its commercial links with the continent, and along with the amenities of most English cities also has features like Lincoln Castle and the gorgeous Usher Gallery, a cultural hub for the town.
In the southern part of the county the attractive stone town of Stamford is a must see, a frequent film location with several medieval churches, and there are attractive market towns across the county including Louth, Alford, Horncastle, Caistor, and Spilsby.
Nature Attractions
Visitors to the county are attracted mainly to its coastal areas, centred on Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes. They offer traditional British seaside pursuits such as sandy beaches, amusements, leisure activities and shopping – this coastal image dates back to 1908, when Skegness branded itself with a ‘Jolly Fisherman’ symbol and the slogan, ‘Skegness is So Bracing’!
Nature activities, including bird watching in the Fens and a large grey seal colony at Donna Brook are also popular with tourists, and the Wolds affords many opportunities for walking, cycling and other more active holidays!
