The Yorkshire Dales is an upland area of the Pennines, much of which is within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It includes a wide range of walking trails as well as extensive limestone cave systems, many of which are accessible to the general public, and is known for its uniquely poetic landscape.
Windswept Landscapes
The area is best understood in terms of the dales themselves: a dale is essentially a valley with sides that rise high above its river. The scenery is of pastures divided by dry stones rising up from the banks of the rivers, eventually giving way to rougher ground and to crags and moors higher up. The larger Dales to the south, Ribblesdale, Malhamdale and Airedale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale, run north to south and in parallel. The northern dales, Wensleydale and Swaledale run from west to east. There are many other smaller or lesser known dales whose rivers meet up with those of the larger Dales. Of course, all have trails of varying difficulty and are ripe for exploration!
Quiet Villages
There are no large towns within the area, but a good number of smaller, often market towns and many villages. The towns and villages themselves are a major draw for visitors, and it’s almost impossible to decide which is the most picturesque, but good examples include Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale to the west, Malham and Appletreewick further south, and Muker and Reeth to the north. Those looking for somewhere larger should look at Skipton – this town, which styles itself as the Gateway to the Dales, frequently features in lists of the best place to live in the country!
Quirky Attractions
The Yorkshire Dales, like most areas popular with tourists, offers a good range of attractions. A particular feature is its waterfalls: Hardraw Force is England’s highest and is accessed through the village pub, and Aysgarth Falls are one of the area’s most popular attractions. Other popular places with visitors include the Wensleydale Creamery (be sure to check out the cheese tasting room!) and the Forbidden Corner with its tricks and traps!
