With its rolling countryside, lovely towns and villages and historical buildings and landmarks, Wiltshire is a fascinating county. Home to Salisbury Cathedral, Longleat and the world famous Stonehenge, there are plenty of reasons to holiday in Wiltshire.
A Preserved Landscape
Almost half of the county is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with diverse and beautiful countryside including rich chalk grassland and ancient woodland. The countryside has high chalk downs and gentle valleys which are home to chocolate box villages and lovely market towns. There are around 8,200 paths in the county with gentle walks and more challenging hikes available for hikers of all abilities.
Charming Towns and Villages
Salisbury is famous for its beautiful gothic cathedral which houses the Magna Carta and one of the world’s oldest clocks. A compact and walkable city, markets have been held in the centre twice a week for over 600 years! There is a central Market Square and Guildhall, and the stunning architecture includes many black and white timber framed buildings.
The tiny village of Lacock has been preserved much as it has been for 200 years. It’s picturesque streets have been the backdrop for many films and television shows, including Downtown Abbey, Cranford, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! Often called the prettiest village in England, Castle Combe has buildings made of honey coloured Cotswold Stone, with lovely pubs, cafes and walks around the village.
Mysterious Attractions
The Stonehenge visitor centre provides a brief introduction before you view these enigmatic stones – audio guides are available to give you the background, but this ancient monument is still largely a mystery to explore! A part of the same UNESCO heritage site is Avebury stone circle, the largest in Britain and around 4600 years old. Now there are roads that run across it as well as a church, pub and cottages within.
Longleat includes the stately home of Longleat House, seat of the Marquis of Bath, and the magnificent gardens as well as a Safari Park with drive through adventures and a play park with activities for children and adults.
