The east may hold the country’s capital of Edinburgh, but West Scotland still has plenty to offer. From cosmopolitan, culturally rich cities to rural areas of unworldly beauty, the region is filled with attractions and activities for everybody to enjoy.
The Artistic City of Glasgow
The most populated city in Scotland, Glasgow is a world renowned hub for arts and culture. This is reflected in the multiple art galleries – Kelvingrove Art Gallery, the Riverside Museum, and the Gallery of Modern Art to name a few – and the influence of Charles Renee Mackintosh, whose gorgeous designs can be found in places like the Willow Tearoom. The city is also home to a thriving music scene, with many popular small venues that regularly host hidden gems.
Of course, there are some great shopping opportunities and restaurants in Glasgow too for anybody interested in a more traditional city break. The ‘style mile’, is known as a local fashion hub, comprised of over 200 stores including high end designer brands, shopping centres, well known high street shops, and independent boutiques across several distinct streets.
The Sweeping Beauty of Loch Lomond
Sitting northwest of Glasgow is the awe-inspiring Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Great Britain. The loch is famous as a venue for watersports and boating, and whether you’re a professional or just wanting to have a paddle, there’s plenty to get involved with. If you’d rather remain on dry land, you can try out the West Loch Lomond cycle path, or just picnic by the lake for a less high energy activity.
The Ethereal Glen Coe
Rural Scotland is known for its fairytale beauty, and nowhere represents this more than the unearthly Glen Coe. Emerging from the remains of an ancient supervolcano, the area is known as Scotland’s primary centre for mountaineering, as well as for its rare flora and fauna. If you don’t feel like travelling beyond the UK, you can even go skiing and take part in other snowsports in this magnificent area, or simply sit back and enjoy the mountain views.
