Warwickshire is in the centre of England, and stretches from the picturesque No Man’s Heath (a hangout for highwaymen) in the North to the gentle, genteel Cotswolds in the South. With bustling cities and peaceful rural spaces alike, Warwickshire is a county that has much to offer anyone who visits!
Diverse Landscape
The very varied landscape includes large cities, rolling hills, woodland and farmland, and so much more! Bluebell Wood is stunning in the spring when the flowers it takes its name from are in full bloom, and places like Kenilworth castle provide spectacular views of all around the region! There may not be a coastline, but Kingsbury Water Park – comprising 15 lakes – offers plenty of paddling opportunities.
Globally Influential Cities
Warwickshire is full of towns and cities with fascinating histories! The cities of Birmingham and Coventry are within the ancient county boundary, and Warwickshire boasts two Royal towns in Leamington Spa and Sutton Coldfield. Warwick is the county town and home to Warwick Castle – a must-see for visitors! Another, though more ruined castle, is to be found in nearby Kenilworth for history buffs too. Rugby is the birthplace of the game of the same name, and even has a museum dedicated to the sport!
In the South is Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon, and there are further literary connections in North Warwickshire in Nuneaton, the home of George Eliot. Atherstone, also in the North of the county is well known for its Shrove Tuesday ball game, when the High Street is boarded up and the men from opposing ends of the town fight to get the ball to their target at the other end of the street!
Attractions
Many of the best known attractions in Warwickshire are in its towns and cities, though its countryside and villages certainly reward exploration! There are plenty of lovely walks along the canals and through the wood, as well as in the gorgeous Cotswolds. Warwickshire is home to many National Trust properties – Baddesley Clinton with its moat (and a genuine bloodstain on the floor for more morbid travellers) is particularly recommended.
