Located between Birmingham and Wales, Shropshire is the biggest landlocked county in the UK, known for both a proud industrial history and lots of serene, natural beauty. Called Salop in centuries gone by, its history of conserving British wildlife and scenery makes it a gorgeous and relaxing place to visit.

Untouched Scenery

As one of the most sparsely populated areas in England, Shropshire is a spot where you can have some valuable quiet time, surrounded by miles of greenery. In fact, over a quarter of the county is made up of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an 802 square kilometer region that contains, among many other things, the Wrekin – allegedly one J.R.R. Tolkien’s influences for Middle Earth!

Arts and Culture

However, if you want to be doing something a little more cosmopolitan, Shropshire can provide that in spades, The medieval county town Shrewsbury is filled to the brim with listed buildings to explore and summer events to get involved with. The most popular is the stunning Shrewsbury Flower Show, which gathers over 100,000 people each year to marvel at the displays and evening fireworks shows.

If you’re visiting outside of summer, however, you aren’t out of luck: the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery contains many prehistoric and Roman artefacts, as well as lots of activities to keep kids occupied. Outside of the county town, there’s the gorgeous Ludlow with its arts centre The Ludlow Assembly Rooms, a venue for theatre, film, music and more!

A Big County With Huge Worldwide Influence

Shropshire may have a small population, but that hasn’t stopped it from producing some huge names; Charles Darwin, the father of evolution whose home you can visit, for one! The region is also home to a range of firsts, most notably the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, the first iron framed building also agreed upon to be the first ever skyscraper! You can even take a look at the Ironbridge Gorge near Telford, which was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and therefore of the modern world as we know it.
