Land of the legendary outlaw Robin Hood, Nottinghamshire is a charming county with farmland, hills and woods as well as lovely villages and market towns. Nottingham is one of the bigger English cities, and has a great range of restaurants, pubs and nightlife – there’s something for everyone in this county!

Vibrant Natural Landscapes

The beautiful rolling countryside includes wildflower meadows, waterside trails, grassland and peaceful glades, and there are seven nature reserves to explore! Creswell Crags, a limestone gorge in the north of the county, is honeycombed with caves, and there are walks around the gorge and lake to suit both casual strolls and more challenging hikes.

Nottingham and Newark

Nottingham has all the attractions of a big city and some unique experiences all its own. Visit the City of Caves part of a hidden maze of over 500 original sandstone caves underneath the streets of Nottingham dating back to the dark ages, or check out the Lace Market, once the centre of Britain’s lace making industry, and its grand red brick warehouses which these days house restaurants and boutiques.

Newark is an old river port and market town. There are the remains of the castle to visit and nearby The Ossington, a mock Tudor temperance hotel built in the 1880s, as well as the market, which is held in the cobbled market place most days.

Historic Attractions

Covering 450 acres, Sherwood Forest Country Park has many paths and trails – of course, the legend of Robin Hood is celebrated here through events and an annual week long festival. A visit to the Major Oak, the iconic oak tree estimated to be between 800 and 1100 years old, is another must!

The Workhouse at Southwell is an authentic Victorian workhouse for the poor preserved by the National Trust. You can learn what life was like for the former residents through the exhibitions and the workhouse storytellers, who bring the history to life. Newstead Abbey, a 12th century monastic abbey and the former home of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, also has much to see, including the poet’s private rooms and extensive grounds to explore.
