Lush Green Landscapes
Northamptonshire is characterised by green rolling countryside with gentle hills, pastoral land and woodland, perfect for relaxing walks through the sleepy picturesque villages. There are many lakes and reservoirs surrounded by lovely countryside where you can take a picnic or do a little fishing, and the many nature reserves have a wide range of habitats including meadows, forests and grasslands, with opportunities for bird and butterfly spotting or a ramble through a bluebell wood at the right time of the year.
Picturesque Market Towns and Villages
Northampton’s cultural quarter has impressive Georgian architecture, the Victorian Gothic Guildhall as well as the house at 78 Derngate redesigned by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 – the only house designed by the architect in England! Oundle is a beautifully preserved market town encircled by the river Nene. The market, established in 1189, is now weekly on Thursdays with a farmers market the second Saturday every month, and the town has many beautiful Georgian limestone buildings and paths and alleyways leading to interesting yards and cottages.
The pretty limestone villages of the county include Crick and Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal, Wadenhoe with its 13th century church, and the ancient parish of Grafton Regis with its royal connections – why not tour them all to get the most out of the county’s unique features?
A Range of Attractions
Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit, home of the British Grand Prix, has a museum and a special effects cinema so you can experience exciting moments in Silverstone racing firsthand! Northampton Museum and Art Gallery has a fine collection of shoes illustrating the town’s industrial heritage which continues today. In addition, factory shops and visits are available for the many high quality shoe manufacturers in and around Northampton if you want to shop!
