The Iconic Landscape
The most famous landscape of Kent is the chalk white cliffs of Dover, best seen from the sea. Kent is mostly made up of a series of east-west ridges – over a quarter of the county is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the North Downs and High Weald. The main river is the Medway, which feeds into the Thames estuary, and is a great spot for a dip on a hot day.
Coastal Towns and Remarkable Cities
The surprisingly small city of Canterbury is the county town, and a place of great historical importance. Along the northern edge of Kent, the towns of Rochester and Whitstable, in particular, have much to keep visitors occupied, from Rochester Castle to Whitstable Harbour. The far east of Kent, the Isle of Thanet, has the seaside resorts of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, while the south coast has the channel ports, including Dover and Folkestone.
Historic Attractions
Canterbury’s unique town centre is partly ringed by ancient walls. Though the cathedral is the greatest draw for visitors, the town has plenty of other picturesque and ancient buildings, as well as a good selection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. Of course. Kent has a plethora of attractions outside of the county town! There are many that are of historical interest, including the homes of Charles Darwin and Winston Churchill. There are also castles such as at Dover and Leeds Castle, and as the ‘garden of England’ Kent offers much in the way of fruit farms, wineries and cider makers. Its long coastline means there are also the fishing and shellfish industries, such as the oyster farms of Whitstable.
