An Assorted Landscape
The Cotswold escarpment rises steeply to the east out the Severn valley; even though the land is higher, it is still a gentle place of rolling hills, farmlands and villages. The Severn valley itself is very fertile, giving rise to a diverse patchwork of arable land, pasture, orchards and woods. The Forest of Dean is a large area of ancient woodland with a strong culture and history of its own. It is home to important wildlife, including wild boar.
Gorgeous Towns and Villages
The architecture of the towns and villages, particularly in the Cotswolds, is widely recognised as some of the most beautiful anywhere in the world! The city of Gloucester is the county town, and has a long history, going back to the Romans and beyond. Cheltenham is another town with a well established history, as well as more current attractions, and is on the edge of the Cotswolds.
Within the Cotswolds, some Gloucestershire towns include Chipping Campden, Morton-in-the-Marsh and Stow-in-the-Wold – all are well set up for visitors. The villages of Bourton-on-the-Water and Upper and Lower Slaughter are well known for their beauty, and you may want to check out Cinderford, the main centre in the Forest of Dean.
Unique Regional Attractions
The towns and villages and the natural history of Gloucestershire all offer a great deal to visitors. For the big city experience Bristol is immediately to the south (historically having been part of the county).
Coopers Hill annually offers one of Britain’s strangest festivals: participants run after a cheese rolling down the 1 in 2 hill, risking life and limb for the thrill of the chase and the entertainment of spectators! Other attractions include the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, Berkeley Castle, Birdland and Jurassic Journey, Sudeley Castle and Gardens, Clearwell Cave and the Dean Forest Railway!
