A Picturesque Landscape
Essex is generally low lying, with lots of leisurely walks to take around the numerous popular nature reserves. Inland there is a lot of farmland with some gorgeous woodland to explore, including Epping Forest on the outskirts of London, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is also over 350 miles of varied coastline, based around three estuaries, with plenty of sandy beaches and swimming spots for sunny days!
Resort Towns and Historic Cities
The county town of Essex is Chelmsford, and is England’s latest designated city, known for its great shopping opportunities in places like Bond Street and the High Chelmer Shopping Centre – both popular with trendy locals! Colchester was an important city in Roman times, and many spectacular ruins of buildings like theatres can be found simply by wandering around this unique town.
Southend is a proper seaside resort, long popular with people from London, and in addition to having the longest pier in the UK is one of the few seaside towns to be experiencing rapid growth! There are also many pretty towns and villages to discover inland, such as Saffron Walden and Firchingfield within the beautiful Dedham valley.
Natural Attractions
In such a large county, there is a wide range of visitor attractions. In terms of natural attractions, the coastal resorts are the most well known, but the mudflats and salt marshes are also worth exploring. The brave (or foolhardy) may wish to seek out what is reputed to be England’s most dangerous path across the sand flats – the deadly Broomway. Inland there is Constable country, where the landscape that inspired the great artist John Constable can be seen!
